As indicated in 2011 in the Massachusetts Biotechnology Council’s report on employment trends in the Massachusetts life sciences industry, continued growth presents expanded career opportunities for well-trained individuals.

As part of the Skilled Careers in Life Sciences (SCILS) Initiative—a four-year, $5 million grant led by the City of Boston and funded by the U.S. Department of Labor—Boston University is offering SCILS scholarships to qualified applicants. Each scholarship awarded helps the Initiative reach its goal of retraining unemployed, or underemployed, individuals who have both professional and educational experience in STEM.

The maximum amount of a SCILS scholarship at Boston University is $3,900 per student. The scholarship will pay for a total of eight (8) Biomedical Laboratory and Clinical Sciences (BLCS) course credits—that’s one 4-credit course per semester. A student taking only one course a semester will receive a scholarship for 50 percent of that course. In order to continue receiving scholarship funds in a subsequent semester, students must receive a grade of B, or better, in all coursework. Scholarships will be available spring 2013 through fall 2015.

Eligibility
To be eligible for the SCILS scholarship, you must:
    be an unemployed or underemployed resident of Metro Boston, or a dislocated worker from a Metro Boston employer (for a list of towns and cities, visit the SCILS Initiative (website.)http://www.scilsinitiative.org/
    be pursuing a degree or a certificate in the Boston University Metropolitan College/School of Medicine Biomedical Laboratory & Clinical Sciences program
    have a minimum of an associate’s degree in STEM and two years of STEM work experience
    be a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident
    submit transcripts that demonstrate a minimum GPA of 3.0
    document financial need, as determined by filing a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at Boston University
    plan to seek employment in the biomedical field following successful completion of the BU program.

Scholarship Application Guidelines

To complete the application process, you must:
    submit a completed application   meet with BLCS staff to review your application
    receive approval from the BLCS program director, for all eligible courses
    complete paperwork/submit documents required by the SCILS initiative
