Scholarships in German( Friedrich Schiller University in Jena)

PhD position on Hotspots of soil water movement induced by vegetation canopies
Country: Germany
Friedrich Schiller University in Jena
Deadline : 20 August 2013
We are currently searching a highly motivated PhD student to join our working group in Ecohydrology at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena and work within a large research consortium on patterns of net precipitation below tree canopies, resulting soil moisture patterns.

The main project aim is to understand whether given vegetation properties enhance or suppress ground water recharge below the root zone and create hotspots of water flow. For this, we will assess the water flow above the ground and compare with patterns registered by an expansive soil sensor network. Our patterns will be related to transport of elements to the deeper soil layers. An important technical task will be the installation and management of the soil sensor network.
We are looking for a highly motivated, active member of our group; a team player who works efficiently, delivers on time lines and is highly interested in interdisciplinary work combining soil hydrology with biogeochemistry and ecology. We offer a young vivid and supportive group, who promotes mutual exchange also with other institutions and early participation in international and national conferences and workshops.

Requirements:
- applicants must hold a Diploma or Master`s degree in hydrology, soil science, geo-ecology or related discipline in the environmental sciences
- applicants should have excellent written and oral communications skills in English
- the ideal candidates will have solid knowledge on water movement in the unsaturated zone and some background in statistics
- readiness to work extended periods in the field is a requirement
- experience with geostatistics, data handling (programming in python, matlab, R or other script languages) as well as soil sensing technology will be an asset

The place of work is Jena, Germany. Salary is based on the guidelines for public service in accordance with pay scale 13 (65%) of the German collective agreement for public service (TVöD). The position starts October 1, 2013 and is limited until  June 30, 2017. The PhD candidates will receive structured doctoral education and training as members of the AquaDiva Graduate School. The FSU is an equal opportunity employer. Women are explicitly encouraged to apply to increase their share in science and research. Physically handicapped persons will be favoured if they are equally qualified.
