Applications for Study or Research in the
People’s Republic of China
Academic Year 2014-2015

The Committee on General Scholarships is pleased to announce scholarship opportunities for year-long study
or research at selected universities in the People's Republic of China during academic year 2014-2015. This
program is made possible through an agreement between Harvard University and the China Scholarship
Council at the Ministry of Education for the People’s Republic of China.
Up to five full scholarships (including tuition and support for living expenses) and ten partial scholarships
(including tuition only) will be offered for study or research at approximately 600 Chinese universities
authorized to admit foreign scholarship students. Admission to the selected university for scholarship winners
is arranged by the China Scholarship Council (CSC) and recipients also receive a visa application which is preapproved
by the Chinese Ministry of Education. The scholarships are available for Harvard undergraduate
and graduate students. Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens and be in good health.

AVAILABLE PROGRAMS
There are 3 scholarship categories for which Harvard students are eligible to apply under the exchange
agreement:

  • Chinese language training
  • General Scholar – for students with at least two years of undergraduate training complete, including
  • upperclassmen and recent graduates of Harvard College
  • Senior Scholar – for students or scholars who hold a master’s degree or above

Applicants must choose one academic program and three institutions as their preferences from among the
offerings described in the Directory of Chinese Higher Institutions Admitting International Students under Chinese
Government Scholarship Program on the CSC website.
Please note that most academic programs, with the exception of language training, are taught in Chinese and the Ministry of
Education may require that applicants with no command of the language take language courses prior to pursuing non-language
programs. However, certain institutions conduct some programs for general and senior scholars in English. Please check the
directory of universities for more information.

The CSC reserves the right to make necessary adjustments on the proposed institutions, specialties and
duration of study. If the nominee is deemed academically ineligible for the program he or she proposes, the
Chinese university may offer admission to an alternate program. Please be advised that final scholarship
results many not be known until May 2014.

HOW TO APPLY:
The application process for this program has multiple steps:
1. Candidates must complete and submit a scholarship application form on-line at the CSC’s website
(see below), and then
2. Candidates must submit two printed copies of the application form along with all supporting
materials to the Committee on General Scholarships at Harvard.
Applications will be reviewed at Harvard, and selected candidates will be nominated by Harvard to the CSC
for consideration. The CSC will work with the designated universities on placement of candidates, and final
results will be announced to candidates through the Committee on General Scholarships.
Once the awards are made and the visa certification forms are issued, the student will work directly with the
Chinese University to which he or she is admitted on all enrollment matters.
The China Scholarship Council website (www.csc.edu.cn) includes a wealth of information about available
options which you may find helpful as you plan your proposed project.
